Social Investment Programme and Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria: A Case of DAKKADA Skill Acquisition Programmes, Akwa Ibom State
Abstract
This study investigated the effect of the Dakkada Skill Acquisition programs on employment generation and household income in Akwa Ibom State. Primary data were gathered from the respondents through a questionnaire on social investment program and socio-economic development. The responses were measured using a 5-point Likert scale, while descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used for data analysis. PPMC analysis was used to test the two null hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings were that Dakkada Skill Acquisition programs had a significantly positive effect on employment generation and household income in Akwa Ibom State. The study concluded that the social investment program has a positive effect on socio-economic development in Akwa Ibom State. The study recommended, among others, that the Akwa Ibom State Government ensure that qualified graduates from the Dakkada Skill Acquisition Programs receive the right start-up equipment and tools. Without access to these essentials, beneficiaries might struggle to leverage their newly acquired skills. Moreover, the Akwa Ibom State Government should set up a structured post-training support and mentorship program for Dakkada graduates. This support should include business mentoring, technical assistance, enterprise management training, and regular check-ins with beneficiaries after they have completed their training. This will promote human capital development.
